Get ready to spice up your life because "Dune" 2021 is headed to digital! Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve's iteration of Frank Herbert's 1965 sci-fi novel has been my favorite adaptation of the novel so far. Timothée Chalamet is perfect as the liberator of Arrakis Paul Atreides, Oscar Isaac is the ultimate space dad as Duke Leto, Rebecca Ferguson is the Lady Jessica of my dreams, and Jason Momoa is the greatest Duncan Idaho I could've asked for. The film is well-cast, and is a sight to behold, a testament to Villeneuve's impeccable vision.
The film received an overwhelmingly positive response (which is a surprise to no one) and led Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel. As per Villeneuve, it will focus on Chani (Zendaya) as a protagonist and the role she plays in Paul's life, which you already know if you've read the book. If you somehow missed watching the movie in theaters or on HBO Max during its initial streaming run, fret not, because "Dune" will be available for Premium Digital Ownership in December. If that doesn't strike your fancy, you can choose to rent the film instead.
Dune Goes Digital
Experiencing "Dune" in all its glory from the comfort of your home just got easier. Villeneuve has revealed that the "Dune" sequel will not see the light of day until 2023, so it's a good time to revisit the first installment, or watch it for the first time and catch up with what everyone's talking about. The movie will first be available to purchase digitally on December 3, 2021, before arriving on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on January 11, 2022.
Premium Digital Ownership releases on December 3 for $29.99. "Dune" will also be available to be digitally rented for a 48-hour period through PVOD for $24.99 RSP on participating digital platforms.
If you'd like to own the "Dune" Blu-ray or DVD, you'll have to wait until January 11. The 4K UHD combo pack and Blu-ray include special features and bonus content, including a look at the making of some of the film's most memorable scenes, including the Sardaukar battle where House Atreides was ambushed by the military force of the Padishah Emperor, and glimpses into the designing of the Sandworm, the creature that wreaks havoc on those who tread the deserts of Arrakis.
"Dune" is one of the best sci-fi book-to-screen adaptations in recent years. Villeneuve's faith in the source material is clear to anyone who has read Herbert's magnum opus, and I can't wait to see the sequel continue to explore Paul's journey. In the meantime, at least we can watch the first movie over and over again.
