Round up the usual cosmic suspects for another superhero space adventure with the Guardians of the Galaxy. The 32nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," is headed your way with a production start in November 2021 and a release date in 2023. It features your favorite green-skinned aliens (Gamora and Drax), a talking space raccoon (Rocket), a sentient, monosyllabic tree (Groot), a cyborg assassin (Nebula), an empath with antennae (Mantis), and a half-human, half-Celestial with the face of Chris Pratt (Peter Quill, AKA Star-Lord)

Here's what we know about it.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Release Date And Where You Can Watch It

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" rockets into theaters on May 5th, 2023. Other films in Phase Four of the MCU, like "Eternals," have locked in a 45-day window of theatrical exclusivity, with "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" stretching that out to 70 days, before heading to the Disney+ streaming service. Presumably, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will follow suit, first as a paid release on the Premier Access tier, then as a movie you can stream for free with any Disney+ subscription.

What Is Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3?

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is the conclusion of the movie trilogy with this roster of characters, begun in 2014 with "Guardians of the Galaxy" and continued in 2017 with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." The team also appeared in "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame," and in 2022, it will appear in "Thor: Love and Thunder" and "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special."

After 2023, it's possible that we'll still see members of the Guardians show up in other Marvel movies or Disney+ shows, and the Guardians film series could even potentially carry on with a fourth installment. However, based on comments that the trilogy's writer-director has made (more on that gent in a second), any hypothetical fourth movie would feature a different incarnation of the team.

We can only speculate that it might include Sylvester Stallone's Ravagers team from the mid-credits scene of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," or even some mix-and-match cosmic version of the Guardians of the Multiverse from "What If...?" (the latter of which does include an alternate Gamora).

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Director, Writer, And More

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is written and directed by James Gunn, who also helmed the first two movies and is the chief creative force behind this series, with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige giving him more leeway than other filmmakers due to the rather obscure nature of the Guardians as comic book characters.

After some controversial old tweets of his resurfaced, Gunn was fired from the third Guardians movie, but then subsequently rehired. This is part of the reason why there's a six-year gap between "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." In the interim, Gunn has kept busy with superhero projects, but he went to work for Marvel's Distinguished Competition, steering another tentpole film and spin-off HBO Max series with DC Comics characters, "The Suicide Squad" and "Peacemaker."

Henry Braham is returning to handle the cinematography of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," while John Murphy is taking over from Tyler Bates as the film's composer.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Cast

The biggest piece of casting news for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is that it is bringing in Will Poulter to portray Adam Warlock, a major Marvel Comics character. We saw Warlock's gold birthing pod in another one of the mid-credits scenes for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Elizabeth Debicki are all expected to return. Saldana's character, Gamora, died in "Infinity War," only to be replaced in the present by another time-slipped version of herself in "Avengers: Endgame." So the Gamora that you see in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be a different version of the same character, played by the same actress.
