We have been downright lousy (and I mean that lovingly) with "Star Wars" stuff over the past few years, be it things that have already been released or the many projects that are in the works. It is a plentiful time for fans, that much is certain, but it can be easy for some things to slip through the cracks.
Such might be the case with "Star Wars: A Droid Story," a new animated adventure making its way to Disney+. For those who might have forgotten about this one, or those just looking to know more, we're here to go over everything we know about the latest story set in a galaxy far, far away.
What Is A Droid Story?
"A Droid Story" was initially announced during Disney's absolutely massive investor presentation in 2020. It was revealed as part of an unexpected avalanche of projects in every corner of the Disney empire, with Lucasfilm unveiling a huge number of things, including the upcoming "Rogue Squadron" movie, an "Ahsoka" series, and much more. As such, it was easy for this to get lost in the shuffle. While she didn't dive too deep on the subject, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said the following at the time:
"As we continue to develop new stories, the intersection of animation and visual effects offers new opportunities for us to explore. Lucasfilm Animation will be teaming up with our unparalleled visual effects team, ILM [Industrial Light & Magic], to develop a special Star Wars adventure for Disney+, 'A Droid Story.'"
In Kennedy's remarks, it was left unclear if this is going to be a movie or a series. However, a report from Deadline later described it as an animated series. Beyond that, little has been revealed, so that's what we're left with for the time being, in terms of surrounding details.
What Is It About?
The actual story of "A Droid Story" is being left somewhat nebulous for the time being. How it will connect to the larger galaxy and its place in the overall "Star Wars" timeline remains uncertain. That said, a brief logline has been revealed by Lucasfilm, which reads as follows.
This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero, guided by legendary duo R2-D2 and C-3PO on a special mission known only to them.
Who Is Involved?
No creative team has been announced for the project as of this writing. It is not clear who will be directing, writing, or producing, and no actors have been revealed either. Unfortunately, details are thin on all fronts right now. That said, it is pretty safe to assume that Anthony Daniels, who has played C-3PO in the "Star Wars" franchise from the very beginning, will be involved. To that end, Daniels said in an interview with CinemaBlend in November 2020 that he never intends to retire from the role.
"No, I'm never going to retire. They're going to have to throw me out the door ... Life is not over, the films may be taking a back seat for 3PO, for a very very long time, I would think. But there's all sorts of other media, particularly now with digital formats, that I'm so happy, and grateful and proud to be part of."
With that in mind, it feels safe to assume that Daniels is on board. The interesting thing will be to see who is going to sign up to join him, and who will play this mysterious new hero that he and R2-D2 will come across.
Does A Droid Story Have A Release Date?
Lucasfilm has not yet set a release date for "A Droid Story" on Disney+. Looking at the calendar, we have "The Book of Boba Fett" on deck for December 2021, with "The Bad Batch" season 2, "Obi-Wan Kenobi," and "Andor" likely arriving in 2022. "The Mandalorian" season 3 might also arrive next year but, at the latest, we'd expect it in early 2023. Then we've got "Ahsoka" to worry about.
So, looking at what's currently on deck, it is tough to imagine we'd see "A Droid Story" before mid-2023. But we'll be sure to keep you posted as more official details come our way.
